Delta State remains one of Nigeria's leading oil and gas producing states, contributing significantly to the nation's energy resources and revenue. Yet, many residents continue to ask a simple but important question: Why is cooking gas still expensive in a state where gas is produced?

The expectation of many citizens is understandable. A state blessed with abundant natural gas resources should ideally enjoy easier access to affordable Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas. However, the reality tells a different story.

Industry experts explain that the price of cooking gas is influenced by several factors beyond the point of extraction. Processing costs, transportation, storage facilities, distribution networks, taxes, operational expenses, and market forces all contribute to the final price paid by consumers.

Despite these explanations, many Delta residents believe that producing communities and host states should benefit from policies that make cooking gas more affordable and accessible. They argue that the state has the opportunity to lead the way in promoting clean energy by supporting local gas distribution infrastructure and encouraging investments that reduce the cost burden on consumers.

High cooking gas prices continue to affect households, small businesses, food vendors, and low-income families who increasingly depend on LPG as an alternative to firewood and kerosene. The rising cost has forced some families to return to less environmentally friendly energy sources.

This concern is therefore a call to action for the Delta State Government and relevant stakeholders in the gas industry. Citizens are urging authorities to explore practical measures that can lower the retail cost of cooking gas, improve distribution channels, and ensure that communities within gas-producing regions enjoy tangible benefits from the resources extracted from their land.

As Nigeria continues to promote cleaner energy solutions, making cooking gas more affordable in producing states such as Delta would not only support economic growth but also improve living standards and encourage wider adoption of cleaner cooking methods.

For many residents, the question remains: If gas is produced here, shouldn't the people feel the benefits more directly?
