Faith Should Never Replace Medical Care

A statement attributed to Apostle Femi Lazarus has reignited an important conversation about faith, medical science, and accountability in religious leadership.

There was a time when some churches discouraged members from watching television, while others opposed certain medical treatments such as blood transfusions. Over the years, many of these positions have changed. The question many people ask is simple: If a teaching can be reversed decades later, how many lives were affected before that change occurred?

The concern becomes even more serious when health is involved.

Countless families have faced difficult situations where religious advice conflicted with medical recommendations. While faith can provide hope, strength, and emotional support during illness, it should not become a substitute for qualified medical treatment.

When doctors spend years studying diseases, treatments, surgery, and emergency care, their expertise should not be dismissed because of personal opinions or unverified teachings. History has repeatedly shown that vaccines, blood transfusions, medications, and modern medical procedures have saved millions of lives.

One of the most painful realities is that when harmful teachings are eventually changed, the correction often receives far less attention than the original message. Those who suffered the consequences may never receive an explanation, acknowledgment, or apology.

This is not an attack on faith. Millions of religious people around the world accept both spiritual beliefs and modern medicine. The issue is whether any religious authority should have the power to persuade followers to reject life-saving treatment.

Faith should inspire wisdom, not fear.

Religious leaders, like politicians, teachers, journalists, and professionals, are human beings capable of making mistakes. Their words should be examined critically, especially when those words concern health, finances, education, or life-and-death decisions.

Citizens must learn to ask questions, verify claims, seek multiple opinions, and make informed choices based on evidence. Blind obedience has never been a substitute for personal responsibility.

A healthy society is one where faith and science work togetherβ€”not where one is used to silence the other.

No pastor, imam, prophet, priest, or spiritual leader will face the consequences of a medical decision more than the patient whose life depends on it.

That is why every individual must be empowered to think independently, seek professional medical advice, and make decisions based on both conscience and evidence.

Lives depend on it.
