Sowore Vows to Scrap JAMB if Elected President
Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) if elected President of Nigeria.
Sowore argued that universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions should be empowered to conduct their own admission processes based strictly on merit, without relying on a centralized examination body.
According to him, the current admission system places unnecessary burdens on students and families while creating bottlenecks in access to higher education.
The AAC candidate maintained that institutions of higher learning should have the autonomy to determine admission criteria and select qualified candidates based on transparent and merit-driven standards.
His remarks have sparked debate among education stakeholders and Nigerians, with some supporting the proposal as a way to reduce bureaucracy, while others argue that JAMB plays an important role in standardizing admissions nationwide.
The proposal forms part of Sowore's broader agenda on education reform, youth empowerment, and institutional restructuring.
As discussions continue, many Nigerians are weighing the potential benefits and challenges of a higher education system without JAMB.
đ Do you support the abolition of JAMB, or should the examination body be reformed instead?
