Sowore Condemns Alleged Deregistration of Political Parties Ahead of Elections
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned the reported deregistration of political parties that have already concluded their primaries and are preparing for upcoming general elections.
In a social media post, Sowore described the action as undemocratic and unjustifiable in a multiparty democracy, arguing that political parties should not be excluded from the electoral process after completing key stages of election preparations.
According to him, any move to deregister parties at such a critical stage could undermine democratic participation, limit political choices available to voters, and raise concerns about the fairness of the electoral process.
The comments have sparked debate among Nigerians, with some agreeing that all legally recognized political parties should be given a fair opportunity to participate in elections, while others argue that electoral regulations must be strictly enforced where necessary.
The development is expected to generate further discussions among political stakeholders, civil society groups, and election observers as the country moves closer to future electoral contests.
What is your view? Should political parties that have completed their primaries be protected from deregistration before general elections, or should electoral authorities retain the power to take such actions where necessary?
