Former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on the Federal Government to consider firm diplomatic and economic measures in response to threats and attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
Speaking at the Senate, Oshiomhole argued that Nigeria should not remain passive when its citizens face intimidation, violence, or forced displacement abroad. He reportedly suggested that economic interests could be reviewed as part of efforts to protect Nigerians and demand accountability.
The senator expressed concern over reports that some groups in South Africa had issued ultimatums to foreign nationals, including Nigerians, and questioned the response of South African authorities to such developments.
According to Oshiomhole, if Nigerians and their businesses can be subjected to hostility without adequate protection, Nigeria may need to reassess its approach toward South African companies operating within its borders.
The remarks have reignited discussions on xenophobic attacks, diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa, and the responsibilities of governments to protect citizens both at home and abroad.
Many Nigerians have continued to call for stronger action against recurring incidents of violence and discrimination targeting African migrants in South Africa.
