Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong has reignited debate on Nigeria's security challenges, calling for a review of existing constitutional and legal provisions to permit responsible firearm ownership by law-abiding citizens.
Speaking in the Senate chamber, Ekpenyong argued that the increasing threats posed by kidnappers, bandits, armed robbers, and other criminal elements have left many Nigerians vulnerable, particularly in areas where security agencies may not be able to respond immediately.
The lawmaker emphasized that the proposal is not aimed at encouraging indiscriminate possession of weapons but rather at exploring legal avenues that would enable responsible citizens to defend themselves and their families under clearly defined regulations.
He noted that any consideration of such reforms should include stringent safeguards such as comprehensive background checks, mandatory firearms training, psychological assessments, licensing requirements, and strict penalties for misuse.
According to the senator, the National Assembly has a responsibility to examine whether current laws adequately balance public safety with citizens' right to self-defense in the face of growing insecurity.
Ekpenyong called for extensive consultations involving security experts, legal practitioners, civil society groups, traditional institutions, and the wider public to assess the implications of any constitutional or legislative amendments on firearm ownership in Nigeria.
