GOOGLE NOW USES MORE ELECTRICITY THAN NIGERIA GENERATES IN A YEAR-Fact Check
Google's rapidly expanding artificial intelligence and cloud computing operations now consume more electricity annually than Nigeria generates for its entire population.
According to Google's 2026 Environmental Report, the technology giant used approximately 43 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2025, representing an increase of more than 250 percent from the 12 TWh it consumed in 2019.
The report revealed that Google's electricity consumption surged by 37 percent in 2025 alone, the largest annual increase in the company's history, driven largely by the growing demand for AI services, cloud infrastructure, Search, YouTube, and large-scale data centers.
For comparison, Nigeria generated about 42.5 TWh of electricity in a recent year, meaning a single technology company now consumes slightly more power than Africa's most populous nation produces annually.
Google acknowledged that while it continues to invest heavily in renewable energy and more efficient infrastructure, the rapid growth of AI is making its sustainability targets increasingly difficult to achieve.
The comparison underscores the immense energy demands of artificial intelligence and digital services, while also drawing attention to Nigeria's long-standing electricity generation challenges despite its population of over 200 million people.
As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, the race to secure reliable electricity is becoming as important as the race to develop the technology itself.
