Sowore: Only the Rule of Law Can Limit Citizens' Freedom of Expression

Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has insisted that the freedom of expression guaranteed to Nigerians can only be restricted by the rule of law and not by individuals occupying positions of power.

Sowore made the statement while reacting to issues surrounding civic freedoms, democratic rights, and the role of government in a constitutional democracy.

According to him, citizens have the constitutional right to express their opinions, criticize public officials, and participate in public discourse without fear of intimidation, provided such expressions remain within the bounds of the law.

He stressed that no government official, agency, or political office holder should place themselves above the Constitution, arguing that the rule of law must remain supreme in a democratic society.

Sowore further maintained that democracy thrives when citizens are free to speak, organize, and hold leaders accountable, adding that attempts to suppress lawful expression undermine democratic principles.

His remarks have generated reactions among supporters and political observers, with many describing freedom of expression as a cornerstone of democratic governance.

The activist has consistently advocated for civil liberties, accountability, and respect for constitutional rights as part of his vision for Nigeria.
