Sapele Youths Express Anger Over Alleged Difficulties in Voter Registration Exercise

Youths in Sapele, Delta State, have expressed frustration over what they describe as difficulties and delays in accessing voter registration services, raising concerns about their ability to participate in future elections.

According to several residents, many eligible voters, particularly young people seeking to register for the first time, have encountered challenges during the ongoing voter registration exercise. The situation has sparked complaints from community members who fear that eligible citizens may be denied the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights.

Some youths alleged that registration equipment was unavailable or that services were not operating as expected, leading to long waiting periods and disappointment among prospective voters.

The development has generated growing concern among civic groups and community leaders, who have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address any operational issues affecting the registration process in the area.

Speaking on the matter, several youths stressed that voter registration is a constitutional right and urged the electoral commission to ensure that every eligible citizen is given a fair opportunity to obtain a voter record before the exercise concludes.

"We want to participate in the democratic process. Young people should not be discouraged from registering to vote because of avoidable administrative challenges," one resident said.

The complaints come amid increased political awareness among young Nigerians, many of whom view voter registration as an important step toward influencing governance and holding public officials accountable.

Residents are therefore calling on INEC to provide clarification regarding the status of registration activities in Sapele and to take immediate steps to resolve any challenges preventing citizens from registering.

As the exercise continues, many youths insist that access to voter registration should remain open, transparent, and accessible to all eligible Nigerians regardless of their location.
