AAC Delta Raises Concern Over Revocation of Sowore's Bail, Calls for Review
The Delta State Chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC), led by Chairman Comrade Prince Maxwell Ogor, has expressed concern over the revocation of the bail previously granted to the party's presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and the subsequent order for his arrest.
In a statement issued on behalf of the party, AAC Delta State said it respects the constitutional role of the judiciary and remains committed to democratic governance, the rule of law, and the independence of the courts. However, the party noted that the development has raised concerns among many Nigerians regarding civil liberties, political participation, and the state of democratic freedoms in the country.
According to the statement, democracy thrives when differing opinions and dissenting voices are accommodated within the boundaries of the law. The party argued that public confidence in democratic institutions depends not only on fairness in judicial proceedings but also on the public perception of that fairness.
The AAC Delta Chapter called for a reconsideration of the decision revoking Sowore's bail and urged authorities to review any order that may unduly restrict his liberty and lawful political activities.
The party further emphasized the need to uphold the constitutional rights guaranteed to all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation and called for the protection of democratic space and civil liberties as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
AAC Delta State warned that actions perceived as limiting opposition participation could heighten public anxiety about democratic freedoms and political inclusion. The party maintained that the right to criticize government policies, advocate reforms, and demand accountability remains fundamental in any democratic society.
The chapter also appealed to the judiciary, civil society organizations, human rights groups, the media, and other stakeholders to continue promoting justice, fairness, due process, and respect for constitutional principles.
Reaffirming its commitment to a just and democratic Nigeria, the party expressed hope that all issues arising from the matter would be resolved in a way that strengthens public confidence in national institutions.
The statement concluded with the assertion: "An injury to one democrat is an injury to all democrats."
