One Year After Buhari: A Legacy Nigerians Are Still Debating
Today marks one year since the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a leader whose eight-year administration remains one of the most debated periods in Nigeria's democratic history.
Buhari came to power in 2015 on three major promises: fighting corruption, defeating insecurity, and rebuilding the economy. Millions of Nigerians placed their hopes in his administration, believing that a former military leader known for discipline would bring accountability and stability to the nation.
His supporters point to achievements such as the expansion of rail infrastructure, investments in roads and bridges, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), social intervention programmes, and efforts to reduce leakages in government finances. They argue that he inherited deep structural problems and governed through difficult periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the global economic disruptions that followed.
However, many Nigerians remember Buhari's years differently.
For countless families and businesses, the Buhari era became synonymous with economic hardship. During his administration, the naira experienced significant depreciation, inflation surged, unemployment climbed, and the cost of living rose steadily. Many small businesses struggled to survive while millions of citizens faced declining purchasing power.
Security also remained a major concern. Despite promises to end insurgency and insecurity, many parts of the country witnessed continued attacks by terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and armed criminal groups. Several communities were displaced, while many Nigerians questioned whether enough was being done to protect lives and property.
The administration's final months were particularly controversial as the naira redesign policy and cash scarcity crisis left citizens stranded, businesses paralysed, and economic activities disrupted across the country.
As Nigerians reflect on Buhari's life and presidency one year after his passing, the debate continues. Was he a reformer who confronted corruption and laid foundations for future development? Or was his administration defined by economic decline, insecurity, and missed opportunities?
History will ultimately judge his place in Nigeria's story, but one thing is certain: Muhammadu Buhari's presidency left a lasting impact on every Nigerian, whether positive or negative.
